- QUESTION: I don't think my daughter is getting the same fair shake in
- athletic programs as my son is. When I compare the relative fitness of both
- of these otherwise normal and active youngsters, it seems clear to me that my
- son has a real edge over my girl. Am I right in thinking that in general boys
- are more fit than girls, and what can I do about it as a concerned and
- interested parent?

- ANSWER: Unfortunately, girls' sports don't rival boys' either in the number
- of programs or in diversity offered in most school systems.
- Several studies comparing the fitness of boys and girls reveal that girls
- are indeed less fit than boys. A National School Population Fitness Survey,
- which is sponsored by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports,
- found that except for flexibility, girls between ages 6 and 17 scored lower
- than boys in every area.
- While it is true that the maximum potential for the sexes are quite
- different, fitness experts tend to agree that girls are further from their
- potential. Since programs may be lacking for girls, it would be wise for
- parents to help and encourage their daughters to participate in athletic
- activities.
- Why not take up bicycling with your daughter, or how about ice-skating,
- daily walks, or swimming? Better yet, why not plan a family fitness program
- that everyone can participate in and benefit from? Sit the family down
- together and discuss everyone's individual likes and dislikes. Try to find an
- activity that offers a satisfying experience for everyone. Keep it outdoors
- for as long as you can, but if you live in an area were weather is a
- consideration, consider some of the many television programs on Public
- Broadcasting and cable that provide good half-hour-long workouts. Do them
- with your children, get Dad involved, and you will find that the benefits can
- be very rewarding for the whole family.
